The Assam Pollution Control Board on June 16, 2026, notified regarding the Mandatory Conversion of Brick Kilns to Cleaner Technologies in Assam.
In line with MoEF&CC notifications and amendments to the Environment (Protection) Rules, 1986, all existing brick kiln units in Assam that have not converted to Zig-Zag or Vertical Shaft technology, or adopted Piped Natural Gas (PNG) as fuel, will not be allowed to operate from July 1, 2026. This mandate provides a defined transition period and aims to ensure environmentally compliant brick production.
Brick kiln owners are required to use only approved fuels such as PNG, coal, firewood, or agricultural residues, while strictly prohibiting the use of pet coke, tyres, plastic, or hazardous waste. They must also obtain a modified Consent to Operate (CTO) after conversion and comply with prescribed emission, siting, and monitoring norms. Existing units converting to Zig-Zag technology are exempted from Consent to Establish (CTE) fees for such conversion.
Additionally, new brick kilns will only be granted approval if they adopt Zig-Zag technology, Vertical Shaft technology, or PNG as fuel. Non-compliant units failing to meet the deadline will face cancellation of CTO and closure of operations without further notice under applicable laws.
